1600 Blood Sugar Reading- August 2011

My brother is currently in ICU rushed to ER three days ago, the lab results showed a reading of blood sugar reading of 1600. He is heavily sedated, receiving insulin, antibiotics, protofol, and other drugs to help him recover. He is on a breathing machine and currently has a pnumonia. I had no idea my brother was a diabetic, so this is all very new to me. We are worried there may be brain damage or damage to his organs, the brain scan showed no obvious signs of damage but again we don't really know. My brother is overweight, smokes, and I know for sure was not eating properly....the eating poorly we are sure lead to this high level sugar level. I've talked with the ER nurses and my brother is very lucky to be alive but was unconcious when found and not sure how long he was in that state, we believe no longer than 3 hours but that seems so long, he is 45 years old and completely deaf.
The doctor definitely feels he is improving we are on day 4 and hopefully by day 5 his blood work readings will be back to normal so they can bring him out of sedation and know what condition he really is in as far as communicating.
Symptoms before he was found unconscious, fever, flu like symptoms, very sluggish.
