Just got the OneTouch Ping
by Jacklyn Duggan
(Chicago,IL,USA)
My name is Jacklyn Duggan, I'm 27, and I've been a diabetic for 22 years. I switched from using insulin pens (novolog) to the OneTouch Ping pump 3 weeks ago. So here is my story....
I went to the American Diabetes Expo in downtown Chicago to get a better idea of the different brands of insulin pumps that were out there. I wasn't "sold" on getting a pump, but i did want to have a better understanding on how a pump actually works. I felt that the Animas (OneTouch Ping) pump was the best fit for me because of a few key factors. One, almost every single representative at the expo was a diabetic and was actually using a pump. This was a big selling point for myself. I noticed that many other pump companies would have the reps telling you how great the pump was but they weren't diabetics. So I felt reassured that if these reps were using this pump then i can get a real feeling on how it actually works.
Two, this is a OneTouch pump. I don't know about you but I've been using OneTouch glucose meters ever since I was diagnosed, so I knew that this was a reliable company.
Third, it came in cool colors. Yes, I'm 27, a female, and I like pink. And that's what color my pump is :)
So, I finally made the big decision to get the OneTouch pump. I contacted an Animas rep and she handled ALL of the paperwork for the insurance company and setting up a pump education class. I knew exactly how to work the pump before I had even received my own!
The glucose meter remote is awesome! It takes all of the guess work out of the equation! I eat out at least twice a week and the calorie king database (that's included in the meter) has every fast food/sit-down restaurant already stored in the meter!
My 5 year old niece recently was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and we just switched her to the same OneTouch Ping pump. She also wanted a pink one (she wanted to be like her Auntie..haha) and she does her own carb counting and her own bolus. Like I said, this pump is so easy! Trust me, if a 5 year old can master it, anyone can!
Happy pumping!
