When i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes my blood sugar level was 2135. I had been suffering from diabetic symptoms for 2 weeks. During that period i had been skiing with a mate, and i remember I was thirsty the whole time, at the bottom of each run I drank an 800ml bottle of water, and halfway down every second run j needed to stop for the toilet. At night I would be walking to and from the toilet simultaneously there was a very distinct sweet taste in my mouth, and my vision had blurred severely. I am an athelete with a vigorous training schedule consisting both running and football sessions, and I remember around the time of being diagnosed I had struggled with both. Firstly in a session of hill sprints I could not sprint at all, and had hit the wall after just 1 hill in the attempt to. The next day i saw my running coach and told him i couldn't train because i had literally no energy, i i was in a bad state having lost 16 kg, and hardly being able to talk, he told me to make sure i was eating properly. Then there was my football that day, I shouldn't of trained but I did, it was at school and I was basically dragging my body around the pitch clueless of what I was doing. I felt as though I was going to die at that stage. I went to the school nurse and she got me too drink some fruit juice in case I had a low blood sugar level ( ironic I know) I got picked ip from school and didn't go for the next couple of days. The symptoms continued to the pinnacle of which one night I spent the whole night drinking juice to try and quench my thirst. The next day I was throwing up all day, anything I ate would not stay down. From hinds sight I actually had a severe case of diabetic ketoacidosis, but I was very unaware of this at the time. That afternoon when my mum got home she drove me to doctor who basically said immediately the moment he saw me that I had diabetes. He said take me straight to hospital as when he tested my sugar level the meter only read high. He even said that he would call for an ambulance if I couldn't get to hospital immediately. I was driven to hospital and taken straight to the emergency room to which I was moved from after 6 hours into an awful ward in the hallway. I lost count of the number of blood tests, injections, and amount of different drip machines I was put on. That night was horrible, the room I occupied, if it could be called a room at all, was very claustrophobic, it had no door, only a mere curtain, an wash situated right in the corridor of which patients were rushed past all night, what made it worse was that the beaming light in the corridor kept me up all night. The next they said I would be moved, however this was delayed until the next day, that night was not as bad. When I was moved the following day, I found my new ward to be much more comforting, with an interesting old man who would tell me about his wars stories. After 4 days, my blood sugar level had been reduced greatly to a safe level, various doctors and nurses had explained to me what i had,and I was release. Just before I was released the doctor at the ward told me my blood sugar level was at 2135 (61) when I was submitted to the hospital. He said I was very very very lucky to be alive, and that they believed it was probably my fitness which enabled my survival. Now just under a year later, I have my diabetes under control, but I am struggling to get back to the same level of running I was at 2 years ago.
