Yes, you can have a BG of 400+ and still function

by Chuck
(USA)

I was diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes about 6 months ago. I began to have blurred vision, an increase in the number of times I urinated, and intermittent tingling in my hands and feet. My BG was 320 and my A1C was 11.5 upon testing by my doctor.

I was prescribed metformin and put on a 2500 calorie diet as a result. I disliked the medicines initial side effects, so I stopped taking it after a week. I also disregarded the diet because it made preparing meals for my family difficult as well as expensive.

I did continue to measure my blood Glucose levels however, and the highest reading I had was 470 with the average being around 320+. I realized after a while that the amount of exercise I did had a profound effect on my BG as well. On the days I was very active they dropped down into the 200's. I know that's not great, but it was an slight improvement.

Today, I've restarted my medication, I'm following my diet, and exercise daily. As a result my BG is down considerably. my last reading after a meal was 150 which I think is great! I feel much better now, have more energy, and don't have to run to the bathroom a dozen times a day. Life is good..

PS

I'm also a smoker and I'm trying to quit. Slowing down my intake has also positively effected my BG levels. Believe it or no, smoking raises your BG levels too! How can something so small and innocuous have such a profound effect on a person's life?
