Sidekick Glucose meter review

sidekick-blood-glucose-monitorThe SideKick Glucose Meter is the first and only disposable glucose meter we have reviewed. This monitor is truly the ultimate in portability. It comes with 50 test strips. Upon expiration or use of all test strips, you simply discard the meter.

I am all for portability. It is nice to carry an inexpensive meter on trips, in your purse (murse for the guys), or generally anywhere that you may want to test your glucose.

However, this meter also is not nearly as comprehensive as other solutions, including no data management software option. Let’s take a look at this meter to see if its portability aspects, can sometimes out weigh some of its limitations.

Key advantages

  • Portability. The meter is small and can go with you most anywhere. The meter is great for the gym, your purse or backpack.
  • No Coding. The meter requires no coding. Just put in a test strip and get started.
  • Small Sample Size. The meter only requires 1.0 microliter and returns results in 10 seconds.
  • Alternative Site Testing. The meter allows for AST on your forearm.

Disadvantages

The meter cannot upload your results into any data management software. You will have to manually do this. While the meter is very small, you still have to carry a separate lancing device. Also, be aware that the operating temperature is very limited, only 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

Test Strips

The Sidekick comes with 50 test strips. You do not buy replacement strips. You discard the meter after you have used all of the strips, or they have expired (whichever comes first). The entire package, meter and 50 strips, costs about $32 dollars.

Bottom Line

Nipro’s business model is to provide inexpensive, simple and accurate meters both for its own marketing and for third parties. The TRUE balance glucose meter covers all of these goals. It also is a preferred Medicare/Medicaid meter.

I can’t say it is exciting, but I would say it will do the basics well.

other consideration

You probably will not own the SideKick long enough to really delve into all of the other offerings from Home Diagnostics. However, you still have access to the 24/7 tech support. You also can use the TRUE Care program discussed in other reviews.

As stated above, you cannot download test results directly into any management software.
